Amitriptyline belongs to a class of medications known as tricyclic antidepressants but is rarely used as a antidepressant. It works on the central nervous system to increase certain chemicals in the brain, which improves pain.

Use of Amitriptyline

Amitriptyline is an antidepressant medication used for mental health problems. It boosts the mood and  well-being of a person to relieve episodes of anxiety and tension. Aside from that, it allows a person to have a good sleep while increasing your daily energy level. Amitriptyline is pharmacologically classified as tricyclic antidepressants.

How it works

Tricyclic antidepressants like Amitriptyline work by targeting natural chemicals in our body's central nervous system to counteract depression. It spares dopamine, a chemical that gives a feeling of motivation.

Benefits of taking Amitriptyline

The most beneficial effect of taking Amitriptyline is that it uplifts the feeling or mood of a person and further takes away anxiety and tension. A good night sleep and regained energy level are also associated with this medication.

Directions in Taking Amitriptyline

Always follow the instructions given by your doctor on how to take this medication. Upon opening the medication package, you will notice the Patient Information Leaflet. You can read it if you want to know more about its details. In case you want to clarify something, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Amitriptyline should be taken orally, one to four times a day as prescribed by your doctor, depending on your body weight and severity of condition. For once a day dosing, taking it before sleeping is recommended to help reduce sleepiness during the day. Dosage adjustment for this medication may be needed according to your response.   In some cases, a doctor will order medication therapy starting at low doses and increase it gradually. This safe technique reduces your risk of experiencing side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth.   In order to get the optimal results of this medication, you have to take it on a daily basis. Set a time of the day when you take it so it is easy for you to remember.

Do not attempt to take more tablets than what is prescribed to you. Increasing your dose or frequency of taking this medicine will not do any good. Your condition needs daily therapy, so your commitment is highly important. If you unintentionally took it more than what is expected, there is a higher chance you will experience unpleasant side effects.   On the first fees of medication therapy, you can expect to feel a lot better. But this doesn't mean you can stop taking Amitriptyline already. Do not stop the therapy just because you started feeling well.

The danger of doing so is because of the so-called 'withdrawal symptoms'. If you suddenly stop taking medicine, your body may feel overwhelmed and ask for it. As a result, your condition may worsen. Mood swings, headache, tiredness and sleep change can happen to you. So what does your doctor do to prevent such problems? When you are good enough without the medicine, your doctor will gradually reduce your dose until it becomes apparent. If you experience anything unpleasant during and after the process, call your doctor right away.

If you don't feel the expected benefits right away, that's completely normal as Amitriptyline's effects are seen overtime. It may exhibit its benefits in a week or 4 before it reaches the optimal effect.   If you experience unpleasant symptoms like persistent sadness and suicidal thoughts, report it to your doctor right away for immediate medical intervention.

Dosing for Amitriptyline

For depression among adults 18-64 years old, the recommended dose for Amitriptyline is 75mg per day in divided doses. If the loading dose is tolerated, your doctor might increase it slowly up to the maximum dose of 150mg daily.   Your physician might also consider a different dosage regimen that starts with 50 or 100 mg of Amitriptyline before bedtime and increases by 25 mg PRN or as needed up to a total of 150 mg (maximum dose per day).   For children ages 0-17, the dosage is not established since no data confirms that Amitriptyline is safe for use.

For senior patients aged 65 and up, the dosing should be adjusted since most of them have kidneys that are not as functional as they used to be. The implication of not following the adjustments is that the body might find it difficult to excrete the drug in the system, it might build up and lead to toxicity. So for such patients, following your doctor's prescription or adjusted dosing is strictly important.
