Solpadol is a brand name for Co-codamol. It is a pain killer medication and is suggested for use by patients 12 years old and above. Solpadol is a combination of two potent drugs, Codeine and Paracetamol.

What is Solpadol Used For?

With a generic name of Co-codamol, Solpadol is a branded medicine used as a painkiller. It is only allowed for patients at least 12 years old. When over-the-counter analgesics like Paracetamol and Ibuprofen don't seem to work for mild to moderate pain, Solpadol is a good choice since it is already a combination of two drugs, Codeine and Paracetamol. Many doctors do prescribe them to reduce pain post operatively.

Solpadol's Mechanism of Action

This drug works by interfering with Prostaglandins, the natural chemicals in the body that give response to any sort of pain or injury. These chemicals are known to enable the nerves to be very sensitive to feel the pain. So if taking Solpadol minimizes the prostaglandin levels in the body, the patient will feel less pain.   On the other hand, Codeine is a type of opioid. Such groups act by copying Endorphins, the natural painkiller hormones in the body. When they do so, Codeine will manage the pain by stopping the entry of pain sensation messages into the brain. Of all known members of opioids, Codeine is a weaker one but effective enough for pain management.

The Benefits of taking Solpadol

Experiencing pain itself is distressing. It interferes with our work or performance in day to day activities. It limits the person and lowers productivity. This is where Solpadol can be of help: to manage the pain. It regulates the neurons from sending pain signals so our brain will not detect it. This in turn would enable the patient to perform daily activities by removing the debilitating pain.

How to take Solpadol

Solpadol capsules should be swallowed with a glassful of water. If you bought the effervescent soluble tablets, you should dissolve it in water first before drinking. Take this medicine as prescribed by your healthcare practitioner. If you wish to stop taking it, it is best to inform your medical doctor first.

Solpadol Dosing

A pharmacist, nurse, or doctor can advise you on how to take this medicine. The usual adult dose for Solpadol is 1-2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours with a maximum of 8 tablets per day. For the elderly, your doctor may reduce the dosage to one tablet only with the same frequency. However, the dosing for Codeine can vary starting from 8 mg to 30 mg. So it is best to ask your doctor first for the dosage that is suitable for you.

For teens aged sixteen years old up to eighteen, a dose of a maximum of 8 tablets in one day is recommended. For children aged 12-15, give one capsule every 4-6 hours with a maximum of four capsules in a day.   For children under 12 years old, Solpadol is not advised since opioids like Codeine may be toxic for them. The usual duration of treatment is 3 days only. If no improvement is seen or if the condition gets worse, your doctor may opt to stop it and prescribe you with other alternatives.

Side Effects to Watch Out

Since Solpadol contains codeine, an opioid drug, it is associated with a wide variety of side effects. This includes nausea, dizziness, vomiting, confusion, lightheadedness, constipation, and urinary problems. Drug dependence and tolerance can also happen with continuous/long-term use of Codeine in high dosages.   Aside from that, patients may experience restlessness, irritability, and other effects with  prolonged use of codeine. In fact, the long-term use of pain relievers for headaches can only make the pain even worse. This is the principle behind drug tolerance.   The following are possible side effects of Paracetamol. Although they are uncommon, the manufacturers still share these information to uphold safety.

  • Leucopenia
  • Lymphatic system disorders
  • Blood related disorders
  • Lymphatic system disorders
  • Agranulocytosis
  • Neutropenia

When not to take it?

If you are a breastfeeding mother, you must avoid taking Solpadol because it is believed to be excreted through breast milk. Inform your doctor right away if you are engaged into such activities, even dental treatments.   Do not take Solpadol if you have known hypersensitivity to paracetamol, codeine or to any of its ingredients.

Avoid taking Solpadol if you have the following pre-existing conditions:

  • Respiratory problems
  • Alcoholism
  • Acute asthma attacks
  • Head injuries
  • Raised cranial pressure
  • Had biliary tract surgery
Pediatric patients from 0-17 years old who underwent surgeries like tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy should not be given Solpadol. Lastly, clinical conditions and treatments associated with liver impairment also make a person ineligible for taking this medicine. An example of this is the CYP2D6 ultra-rapid metabolizing treatment.   Always remember that Solpadol requires a prescription and it is important to take it as advised by your healthcare practitioner.
